People Have Forgotten to Be Human

What almost two weeks in Melbourne with The Clean Life team taught me

I’m Alida, The Clean Life’s Brand and Content Manager. Most of the time, I write the captions, plan the content, work on the website and help tell the story of this brand from a laptop in Manila.

Manila sits only two or three hours behind Melbourne, depending on the time of year. Close enough that our mornings almost overlap. Close enough that I could message someone the second they wake up and watch the reply come through before my coffee’s gone cold.

Most of my working day, I’m also teaching a screen to sound more human. More warm. More like us. It’s strange work, if you sit with it too long. You start to wonder what “human” even means when part of your job is coaching a machine to imitate it.

So I already knew The Clean Life before I went to Melbourne. Or at least, I thought I did.

I knew it through Beckii’s stories. The ones she’d tell me about the business, the team, the hard seasons, the wins, the people they had helped. I knew it through the stories the team shared online too, through little glimpses into their work and their lives that I’d often watch while building the next week’s content.

And of course, I already knew Beckii personally.

But there’s a difference between hearing someone’s stories and standing close enough to watch their face while they tell you.

Almost two weeks in Melbourne gave me that. The chance to finally step into the world I’d been helping tell stories about, from a laptop that was never really as far away as it felt.

I got to meet the people behind the names I’d typed so many times.

I got to spend time with the team, go out on cleans with them, sit around and talk, laugh with them, hear their stories and, most importantly, hear in their own words why they love what they do.

Everything I already knew about The Clean Life started to make so much more sense.

It stopped being just a brand I worked for.

It became people. Real people I had now met, laughed with, learned from and spent time with.

And that changed something in me.

They’re even more beautiful in person

And when I say that, I don’t really mean how they look.

I mean their hearts.

There is something about meeting people in person that a screen just can’t capture.

You can see someone’s smile in a photo. You can read their words. You can watch their stories.

But you don’t get to experience the little things that way.

The way someone talks about a client. The pride they take in their work. The way they joke with each other between jobs, in that shorthand only years of working side by side can build.

After spending time with the team, I started noticing that everyone had this little “TCL thing” about them.

TCL team get together

They’re all so different. Different personalities, cultures, backgrounds and stories.

But there is this shared thread between them.

They care.

And I think that’s the thing that makes The Clean Life what it is.

We’re a heart-based company. That’s just who we are. And I think we’ve been incredibly blessed with staff who are the same. People who don’t just come to work to do a job, but genuinely care about the people they’re helping and the difference they’re able to make.

The cleaning is what they do. The care is why they do it.

Why do you love what you do?

One of my favourite parts of being with the team was simply talking to them about their work.

I wanted to know: why do you actually love doing this?

And what struck me was that the answer was rarely about cleaning itself.

It was about helping. About seeing a visible difference. About knowing that the work they do can make someone’s day a little easier. Sometimes their whole week.

They talked about the satisfaction of walking into a space and leaving it better than they found it. But underneath all of that was this quiet understanding that they’re not just cleaning a house.

They’re helping a person.

Maybe that person is exhausted. Maybe they’re overwhelmed. Maybe they’re caring for children. Maybe they’re working long hours. Maybe they’ve got a million things on their plate and cleaning is simply one more thing they don’t have the energy for. Maybe they just need someone to help carry the load for a little while, and they’ve stopped saying that out loud.

And for a few hours, a Home Specialist from The Clean Life steps into that space and helps.

No judgement. No shame. Just:

“I’ve got this.”

And honestly, that’s so much bigger than cleaning.

The trust of being invited into someone’s home

This was probably the thing I felt most deeply while I was there.

We talk about cleaning as a service. But really, it’s a very personal one.

Someone is inviting you into their home. Their private space. The place where their children live, where their pets sleep, where their ordinary days happen, where life happens in all its messiness.

And they’re trusting you to take care of it.

I think we can sometimes forget how big that is. Especially when someone might already feel embarrassed about the state of their home, or nervous about having someone come in. As if a home falling behind means something about them, rather than just meaning life got loud for a while.

It doesn’t mean anything about them. It just means they’re human.

But watching the team interact with clients made me understand something even more clearly.

The Clean Life isn’t just entering people’s homes. They’re being trusted with people’s lives.

And that trust isn’t something you can put into a brand guideline.

It’s built in the little moments. In how you speak to someone. In whether you show up when you say you will. In whether you treat their home with respect. In whether you make them feel comfortable instead of judged.

I watched a team member knock, wait, and greet a client by name before they’d even stepped through the door, the way you’d greet a friend, not a job.

Door after door, home after home, I got to see that care in action.

And I think that’s when I really understood why trust is at the centre of The Clean Life.

In an age of AI, this feels important

We’re living in a time where almost everything is becoming faster, easier and more automated. AI can write our emails, create our images, even sound a little like us if we let it.

And I love technology. I’m part of the team helping build this brand from a laptop a couple of hours behind Melbourne’s clock, if not its world.

But Melbourne reminded me of something I don’t want to lose.

Needing help is human.

A home that’s fallen behind because life happened is human.

A real heart to heart, no agenda, no script, is human.

Caring about someone when nothing is making you do it is human.

You can automate a customer journey. You can’t automate someone noticing you need help before you’ve asked, or showing up at your door on a cold morning because they said they would.

That’s what the title means to me now. It’s not that people have forgotten how to be human. It’s that with everything moving this fast, it’s easy to forget to let ourselves be.

Different cultures. The same language.

One of the things I loved most about meeting the team was seeing just how different everyone is.

We don’t all come from the same place. We don’t have the same culture, background or life experience.

But somehow, care doesn’t need translating.

Care is a universal language.

You don’t need to have lived the same life as someone to treat them with dignity. You don’t need to share someone’s culture to understand that they need help. You don’t need to know someone’s whole story to make their day a little easier.

We all know what it feels like to be cared for.

And we all know what it feels like when someone genuinely gives a damn.

I think that’s part of the magic of TCL. Different people, different stories, but the same heart behind the work.

It made me want to care more about my own work

This was probably the most unexpected part of the trip.

Working remotely, it’s easy to lose sight of the people on the other side of your work. I’m usually thinking about what should we post, how should we say this, what does the website need, what’s the next campaign, what can we improve.

And then suddenly, I was in Melbourne with the people those things were actually for.

I was seeing the work happen. I was hearing why they care about it. I was seeing the impact they have on people’s lives, in voices that didn’t perform for a camera because there wasn’t one.

And it made me think: I want to care about what I do even more.

Because I’m not just creating content for a cleaning company.

I’m helping tell the story of people who genuinely want to make other people’s lives a little lighter. And when you’ve actually met those people, stood in their kitchens, heard their voices catch a little when they talk about a client who’s become like family, that story becomes impossible to treat as “just content.”

It made me want to write better. Think more deeply. Because now I know the people behind the stories, and I owe them more than a caption that sounds nice.

Feelin' Fresh team
The real heart of The Clean Life

I went to Melbourne already knowing that The Clean Life was about more than cleaning.

But spending almost two weeks with the team gave me a much deeper understanding of what that actually means.

It’s in the little things. The conversations. The laughter. The pride. The trust. The homes we’ve been invited into, messy or not. The clients who let us help when life feels like too much. The team members who genuinely love being able to make a visible difference. And all the people behind the scenes who care about making all of that possible.

Maybe that’s the real TCL thing.

Not that everyone is the same.

But that everyone understands what it means to care, and chooses to anyway, even on the ordinary days. Especially on the ordinary days.

Because at the end of the day, people still need people.

And maybe people haven’t forgotten to be human after all. We’ve just gotten a little busy, a little distracted, a little too used to things being automated for us.

Needing help is human. A disorganised home because life happened is human. A real conversation is human. Caring, without being asked to, is human.

I didn’t know how much I needed that reminder until Melbourne.

Let’s not lose it. 💚
